HARLINGEN, TEXAS (AUGUST 21, 2023) – In a recent report published by Site Selection, which examined U.S. cities with populations below 75,000, Harlingen was identified as one of the best small towns to launch a small business. The sixth annual ranking of the Best Small Cities for Small Business, courtesy of VerizonSpecials.com, considered six factors that contribute to a small business's success:

  • Growing population

  • Highly educated workforce

  • Labor-friendly commute times

  • Favorable tax climate

  • Easy access to capital

  • Widespread broadband access

Using these measures, VerizonSpecials.com created a list of the top 50 cities to start a small business, with Harlingen being one of only three cities in the state of Texas to rank. They looked at over 300 cities across the U.S. to come up with the results of the report.

The recognition comes as no surprise to those who have experienced the city's supportive environment and business-friendly opportunities firsthand, and in light of this achievement, the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) turned to the voices of local business owners, who share their experiences and insights.

“Harlingen has been a great place to do business for us. We’ve been here 13 years, and it’s awesome. The community has just been a blessing, and everyone that’s been a part of our journey – they feel like family. I thank God that we moved here and that we chose Harlingen as our place to do business.” - Dr. Linda Hagins and Joseph Hagins, Owners of VIP Full Service Salon

“Harlingen has helped my business thrive by the low cost of real estate comparable to the rest of the United States.” - Jesse Flores, Owner of Harlingen Pets & Developer in Harlingen

“Texas Enterprises chose Harlingen for Kapalua Marine, Fuels & Lubes in large part due to the [Greater Chamber of Harlingen]’s vision. Harlingen is in the heart of the commerce in the RGV, and that’s where we want to be. We want to be part of their growth, their future and their focus.” - Jason Sanchez, Territory Manager for Texas Enterprises

Small businesses have a huge economic impact on the community and are the backbone of the local economy, says HEDC manager and CEO, Orlando Campos.

Campos expressed his enthusiasm at the top 50 ranking, stating, “The entrepreneurial spirit is strong in Harlingen, which is why the HEDC is working hand in hand with key stakeholders to ensure support for small businesses is provided. This will help create stronger business seedlings that could potentially flourish into the next large business in our community.”

He and his staff work closely with local entrepreneurs, offering practical and technical support to help the small business community thrive. HEDC Business Retention and Expansion Manager, Jane Lozano, serves as the daily liaison between them and the City of Harlingen.

"We're here to back small businesses every step of the way," says Lozano. “Whether it's resources, guidance, or simply a listening ear, the Harlingen EDC is your partner in success."

The HEDC invites aspiring entrepreneurs to join the city’s vibrant community and experience firsthand the opportunities they have to offer. For more information or to begin your business journey in Harlingen, reach out today.
