Building Dreams and Communities

HARLINGEN, TX (November 21, 2023) Local lumberyard and home improvement center, Matt’s Building Materials, is excited to announce that their fourth location is coming to Harlingen, Texas.

“Cameron County will be the hotspot in the valley for the next twenty years,” says Jeremy Smith, one of the co-owners of Matt’s Building Materials. “As people and companies continue to pour into the community, homes will need to be built to accommodate this growth.”

Despite the loss and ongoing rebuild of their Pharr store due to a fire in early 2022, Matt’s Building Materials has continued to gain market share and cement themselves as one of the premier retailers for building supplies in the Rio Grande Valley.

“We’ve seen substantial growth in Cameron County over the past few years, and Harlingen is perfectly centered for serving the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The Harlingen store allows us to expand our capacity and meet the needs of our customers today and in the future,” continued Mr. Smith.

A Partnership for Mutual Development

Both the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and City of Harlingen collaborated with Matt’s Building Materials on its expansion to the community. Once developed, the 5-acre lot will have a 17,000 sq/ft retail building, lumberyard, access to a rail spur for quick unloading of materials, and will employ over 20 people. The salaries of its employees and its contributions to the sales and property taxes of the city make it an attractive addition to Harlingen.

“Harlingen is on the move, and myself, along with the Harlingen EDC and City Commission, are proud to welcome Matt's Building Materials to our growing city,” said City of Harlingen mayor, Norma Sepulveda. “With Harlingen serving as a strategic corridor within the Rio Grande Valley, we are confident Matt's picked the right place to locate their hub and eager for them to open their doors to the community."

Media and Members of the Public are Invited to Attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony

To celebrate the occasion, the Harlingen EDC and City of Harlingen, in partnership with the Greater Chamber of Harlingen, will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony on the 15th of December at the site of the future store – located at the southwest corner of Roosevelt Rd and I-69 E along the railroad tracks. The ceremony will be joined by Matt’s Building Materials’ ownership team, as well as friends and family of the business.
