HARLINGEN, TEXAS (Feb. 18, 2021) – The Council for Community and Economic Research has once again named Harlingen, Texas the most affordable city in the United States.

The city outranked other participating cities for affordability, ranking 20% below the national average for cost of living. In short, this means that you get more for your money in Harlingen.

According to the press release distributed by the Council for Community and Economic Research, the Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services, excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures.

The index is based on more than 90,000 prices, covering 60 different items for which prices are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, and university applied economic centers in each of the participating urban areas.

The composite index is based on six component categories: housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.
