About 25 minutes eastbound on I-2 is Sunrise Mall in Brownsville, TX. The regional mall has major stores such as Bealls, Dillard’s, Sears, JC Penny and much more. A Cinemark theatre is also located inside the mall near the food court. The shopping center is surrounded with other specialty stores and shopping plazas.

Heading westbound on I-2, you will come to McAllen where you can find La Plaza Mall. The mall is also home to numerous major retail stores, along with smaller specialty stores. The area is also surrounded with numerous shopping plazas, coffee shops and great places to eat.

 

Across the Border – Shopping in Mexico
The Rio Grande Valley hugs the Mexican border – allowing Harlingen residents and the rest of South Texas easy access to Mexico. Just a short drive away, the other side of the border has numerous Mexican restaurants with authentic Mexican dishes. Uou can simply walk the streets and shop at a variety of outdoor shopping stands and more. Cool down during a hot afternoon with a mixed drink or a Mexican beer.

International Crossings
Harlingen and Rio Grande Valley natives have the convenience of entering Mexico through over twelve International Crossings. The Los Indios Free Trade Bridge, the Progreso/Nuevo Progreso International Bridge, Brownsville-Matamoros Bridge and the Pharr/Reynosa International Bridge are just a few that allow easy access into Mexico for hours of shopping and more.

Matamoros
Matamoros is Harlingen’s Sister City.  This Mexican city across the border from Brownsville has great shopping areas where you can find bargains on almost anything. From hand-crafted items, to leather goods, gold and jewelry and more, Matamoros has it all. The area is also always expanding with a variety of restaurants and bars. A visit to Matamoros is a must for any Valley resident or tourist.

Reynosa
Slightly further away from Harlingen is Reynosa.  It is a modern-day metropolis of 750,000 and a great place to spend a few hours bargain hunting at one of the many local stores, eating great, authentic Mexican dishes or enjoying a drink or two.
