Message from the Chief Executive Officer
Well, I know some of you may have thought we went on vacation during Spring Break, but we didn’t. I just took a break from writing this weekly electronic newsletter. I do have one observation about this particular Spring Break: it seems to me that the closer one gets to the coast, the more people tend to “go” on Spring Break. I hope those who were out had a great time and restful week.
Joseph started something new recently. Yes, soccer, but that isn’t new for him. He is now participating in a T-ball league! Some may question whether I have lost my mind by placing a bat in the hands of my four-year old! Actually, we started allowing him to use bats and clubs at an even earlier age. He’s a natural at hitting things. So, we will see how this adventure progresses.
Joseph is learning that one doesn’t just pick up a bat or a glove and automatically become a world-class baseball player. It takes work and lots of practice. It takes dedication, and yes; it also takes skill. Skill can be developed as long as the subject is willing. Being a baseball player also requires that one learn to be a team player. Players can be successful, but teams win pennants.
The Development Corporation of Harlingen, Inc. or Harlingen EDC as many out there know us is a team. The team has five board members, a manager/CEO, and some other very important players. This team, much like Joseph’s band of four-year old brothers, changes every so often. Board members serve their terms and then move on to other things in their lives. In the past few months, we’ve seen a change in some of our board member positions, and like baseball, change in our team roster is inevitable. So, once again, I’d like to thank previous board members for helping the team.
HEDC board members usually serve a three-year term, but can be re-appointed for a second three year term. One current member will have served two consecutive three-year terms and actually served for a bit more because he was initially appointed to serve the remainder of someone else’s term. At the end of this month, Terry Gray will pass on the reins. Thanks to Terry Gray for his 7+ years of service to Harlingen and the EDC board!
As I mentioned earlier, board positions were vacated earlier this fiscal year and have been filled. Bob Dunkin has filled Desi Martinez’s unexpired term. Now, Michael Lamon will be filling Ernesto Silva’s unexpired term.Welcome Michael to the team next time you see him!
Terry Gray’s successor has been appointed as well. Lupita Gutierrez Garza has now been selected to fill Terry’s seat. Welcome to the team Lupita!
With the recent selections to the HEDC Board of Directors, we now have a complete team once again. The game is still the same: find ways to help create or attract new investment and create new job opportunities. All we have to do is to learn about each other’s skills and how the team can win pennants! I look forward to working with all my new teammates!
Some of the highlights of the past two weeks included working on a new website. The site is up, but not quite ready to go live. Look for the new website to be up and running within the next few weeks. We have also been working on a broker tour, a developer showcase, meeting with prospects, touring the RAHC clinical studies unit, meeting with the Customs and Border Protection Port Director, and much more.
We have our regularly-scheduled Board of Directors’ meeting this Tuesday as well. In addition, a couple of our staff members will be attending some training courses in the next few weeks to help sharpen their skills. Trade show preparations for trips in May and later this year are already underway. I’ll provide more information on these trips soon.
I hope everyone had a great weekend, and look forward to a productive week ahead.
