Kiplinger, a Washington, D.C.-based publisher of business forecasts and personal finance advice, ranks Harlingen third in their 10 Least-Expensive Cities for Living in the U.S.A. list. The rankings were compiled based on the ACCRA Cost of Living Index produced by the Council for Community and Economic Research.
Harlingen’s Cost of Living Index was 86.1 compared to a national average of 100. The “composite index” is based on six components. The components (and the index for Harlingen) were: grocery items (84.9), housing (81.0), utilities (110.2), transportation (89.1), health care (93.5) and miscellaneous goods and services (81.8).
“Cost of living is an important aspect of the cost of doing business so this ranking by Kiplinger is helpful to our economic development efforts,” according to Bill Martin, CEO of the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation. “A consistently low cost of living is a good sign that Harlingen is an excellent place to live and do business,” Martin concluded.
McAllen, Texas, another city in the Rio South Texas region, was the only other city in Texas to make the “least expensive” list at number four.
