June 9, 2009 – Brownsville-Harlingen area employers expect to hire at a steady pace during the third quarter of 2009, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. From July to September, 20% of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 13% expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 64% expect to maintain their current staff levels and 3% are not certain of their hiring plans. For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Construction, Durable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services, Education & Health Services, Leisure & Hospitality and Government. Employers in Other Services plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in Nondurable Goods Manufacturing and Wholesale & Retail Trade is expected to remain unchanged. - MORE - Of the more than 28,000 employers surveyed in the U.S., 15% expect to increase their staff levels during the July – September period, while 13% expect to reduce their payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of 2%. Sixty-seven percent expect no change in hiring, and 5% are undecided about their Quarter 3 2009 hiring plans. The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on September 8, 2009 to report hiring expectations for Quarter 4 2009.
